Trip Overview

Bandipur tour package is designed for the Nepali travel lovers to see the cultural tourism

Discover the charm of the Newari culture and the stunning natural beauty of the Himalayas with our Bandipur tour package. Nestled in the hills of central Nepal, Bandipur is a beautifully preserved village that offers panoramic views of the Himalayan range, including Dhaulagiri, Annapurna, Manaslu, and Langtang.

Bandipur is a real national treasure and an open-air Newari culture and customs museum. This village was originally part of the Magar kingdom of Tanahun and was an essential stop along the commercial route between India and Tibet.

The journey from Kathmandu to Bandipur is not very long; it takes 3 – 4 hours to reach Dumre and then half an hour to go up to the village of Bandipur. From Kathmandu, the buses to Pokhara stop in Dumre, and then you can take a taxi, a jeep, or a minibus to reach the village. Once you arrive, you will be pleasantly surprised that cars, bikes, and scooters are strictly prohibited from entering the town. You can, therefore, spend whole days walking through the city and the surrounding Magar villages.

In Bandipur, there are some impressive temples to see, among them the Bindebasini Mandir, covered with ancient carvings and consecrated to Durga and the Khadga Devi Mandir. This squat building, shaped like a barn, holds the sacred sword of Mukunda Sen, who during the XVI century was the king of Palpa. Once a year, during the Dasain festival, the sword is carried to the main bazaar and washed with the blood of a sheep. It is very relaxing and pleasant to walk through the Balabazaar, a fantastic gallery of ancient shop-houses, once inhabited by Newari cloth-merchants and through the narrow streets, where you can see farmers taking care of their garden, women carrying baskets of freshly cut grass for the animals, children piling cobs of corn on wooden frames and chickens clucking.

Another easy walk is the one which is 30 minutes takes to the silk factory, where silkworms are bred.

Another gem of Bandipur is Tundikhel, the ancient parade ground, which opens onto a ridge from the flat top. The view of the Himalayas from here is breathtaking. Go there at sunset when the setting sun dyes the tops of pink and golden shades.

If you have more time to spend, it is fascinating to visit the famous Siddha Gufa, which is said to be the largest cave in Nepal. The entrance is narrow but leads to a big vaulted room, where many stalactites and stalagmites are found.

It is advisable to be accompanied by a local guide. The medieval aspect, the many interesting walks, and the chance to get to know the rural life of Newari farmers intimately make Bandipur a lovely place and a must not be missed.

Bandipur Eco-Cultural Tourism Project

(BECT-Project) is the project that lifts the face of Bandipur as one of the major tourist destinations of Nepal. BECT-Project had assistance from EuropeAid. This project was a part of a European Commission/Asia Urbs-funded partnership project with the two European partner cities: Municipality of Hydra, Greece Hydra (island), and Commune d Riomaggiore, Italy Riomaggiore. Its objectives were to develop and promote Bandipur as a unique tourist destination: enhance, upgrade and conserve the built and natural environment of Bandipur; and support local enterprises to revitalize economic activities, ultimately extending the length of tourist's stay in Bandipur.

Places to visit in Bandipur UNESCO Town Nepal are:

Bandipur Main Bazaar

A shopping street of cobblestone roads comprising bars, hotels, cafes, old buildings, and shops. A beautiful town indeed!

Thani Mai Temple Viewpoint

The sunrise views from Gurungche Hill when climbing to Thani Mai Temple are fantastic. You will see the snow-peaked mountains of the Himalayas. If it is foggy, the ranges will appear a beautiful white lake. The starting point to the Thani Mai Temple is from the school at the southwest end of the bazaar. It is a 30-minute hike.

Tundikhel Viewpoint in Bandipur

A long time ago, business traders would gather in this place to buy things from India and Tibet before starting the long trek to Lhasa or India. It was a former parade ground for the Gurkha armies. These grounds have become a local picnic spot and viewpoint in modern days. On a beautiful day, you can see stunning panoramic views of Dhaulagiri (8167m), Machhapuchhare (6997m), Langtang Lirung (7246m), Manaslu (8162m) and Ganesh Himal (7406m). Best to visit during sunrise or sunset.

Bindebasini Temple

Hindu Temple in Bandipur. Located at the northeast end of the shopping street, you can find this temple dedicated to God Durga. Its ancient walls are covered in intricate carvings. The Padma library, a striking 18th-century building with Newari-styled carved windows and beams, is facing the temple across the square.

Silkworm Farm

Over here, you can see how silk is produced. The farm has orchards of mulberry plants grown for worm food – the worms themselves are reared indoors, usually from August to December and March to May. But you can visit them at any time, and there will be a staff member on hand to explain the process.
