Trip Overview

Muktinath temple is regarded as the religious symbol of both Hindus and Buddhists. According to Hinduism, Lord Vishnu got salvation from the curse given by Brinda, the wife of Jalandhar. That is why people worship Vishnu as Muktinath. This holy shrine is one of eight such shrines that are believed to have arisen on its own. Muktinath temple has a pagoda-style and is one of 108 Vaishnava shrines. Muktinath means Lord of Liberation. From the temple, you get a gorgeous view of snowcapped Annapurna range to the south or the Tibetan Plateau to the north.

Muktinath consists of two words, "Mukti" and "Nath," where Mukti means "Salvation or Nirvana," and Nath represents "God or Master." The temple holds great importance among spiritual people in the south Asian sub-continent.

Importance of visiting Muktinath Temple

Location of Muktinath Temple

Muktinath Temple is situated 24km northeast direction of Jomsom at an elevation of 3710 meters from the sea level. To reach Muktinath Temple, one has to cross Thorong-La mountain pass in the Annapurna Conservation Area of Manang district in Nepal. The temple lies in the Annapurna Circuit, one of the most popular trekking routes of Nepal.

Best Time to Visit Muktinath

However, the best months for visiting are March, April, May, June, September, October, and November as the weather will be clear and you will have amazing views of the mountains during these months. How to Get to Muktinath?

1st option: Mutinath Tour By Road - 2 nights (Kathmandu - Pokhara - Jomsom - Muktinath)

Following the Prithivi Highway from Kathmandu, you can reach Pokhara followed by crossing Bedi, Tatopani, Ghasa, Marpha Jomsom and Kagbeni the next destination will be Muktinath. There is an option of taking a bus or Jeep from Kathmandu or Pokhara. You can choose any travel agency that offers the Muktinath Jeep Tour package if you don’t want the hassle of booking buses and jeeps.

First Stop: The road of the Muktinath Tour that begins from Pokhara is quite comfortable. A night stay at Pokhara is what most travelers prefer as it is a tourist hub, and the facility of accommodation is available here from cheap guesthouses to high class five star hotels. Besides this, shopping centers and restaurants near the lakeside are other attractions of this area to entertain its visitors.

Second Stop: The next stop of this trip will be Jomsom, laying at an elevation of 3734 meters from sea level is about 170km away from Pokhara. You will find the road condition fine for 100km from Beni and then rough for 70km to Jomsom. The duration of the trip is around nine hours. If you wish to visit Muktinath Temple on the same day, you can easily reach the temple, do some Pooja and even return to Jomsom.

You can make your trip on the next day by catching a jeep after having a walk of around half an hour and then one and a half hour drive to Ranipauwa Jeep Station at Muktinath Temple. A hike of another twenty-five minutes from here will take you to the entrance of the temple. Once you reach the top, you can have Pooja at the temple and enjoy the surrounding views. You will have the option of either stop at Beni or head back to Pokhara.

2nd option: Mutinath Tour By Flight - 1 night (Kathmandu - Pokhara - Jomsom - Muktinath) 

There is no direct flight from Kathmandu, so Jomsom airport is the nearest airport to Muktinath Temple. So, first, you need to reach Pokhara and then take a flight to Jomsom. Flights to Jomsom frequently delayed as the place is windy. On the other hand, flights from Pokhara to Jomsom are operated only in the morning, so a night stay at Pokhara is compulsory. 

3rd option: Mutinath Tour By Helicopter - 1:30 hours (Kathmandu - Muktinath)

From Kathmandu, you can easily book Muktinath yatra by helicopter. It takes around an hour and a half to reach Muktinath Temple from Kathmandu via Helicopter. There is a helipad at Ranipauwa and half an hour of walk from here will take you to the temple.

4th option: Visit Muktinath By Trek - 7 nights

Apart from the pilgrimage tour, Muktinath is also popular for adventurous trekking. Starting from Nayapul, the trek goes to Tikhedunga, Ghorepani, Tatopani, Ghasa, Marpha, Kagbeni before reaching Muktinath. The duration of walking per day is about 7 to 8 hours.
