Trip Overview

Among entire trekking destination, the upper Mustang (Mini Tibet of Nepal/ Mountain Desert of Nepal) is identified as a popular and rewarding spot beyond the majestic Himalayan Range.   

Upper Mustang trekking 16 days begins with sightseeing throughout some attractions of Kathmandu. After that, drive to Pokhara and fly to Jomsom before starting a walk. After developing trek by passing numerous of unique settlements, windy deserted trail, cultural spots and apple orchards takes to Lo Manthang for exploration of Tibetan culture, tradition, language and lifestyle. Therefore, admiring rocky and steady trails leads towards Jomsom for fly to Pokhara and drive to Kathmandu. Unique desert walking trail with stunning views of Nilgiri, Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhare and many more other famous peaks are as additional reward for upper Mustang trekkers.


Day 1: Arrival day in Kathmandu (1,300 m)

First day, focusing your arrival time on Tribhuwan International Airport (Kathmandu), our association representatives will be awaiting you there for your warm welcome with private vehicle for shifting you towards fine tourist standard inn. Today, we also schedule for a short meeting to discuss about upcoming trek.

Day 2: Sightseeing valley and preparation day

Today after attending our morning delicious breakfast, we plan for sightseeing famous spots; Pashupatinath Temple, Swyambhunath Stupa (monkey temple) and Boudhanath Stupa which are on list of UNESCO World Heritage Site. After inspecting these amazing sites for some hours, we return back for finalizing trekking equipments those which are essential for our upcoming trek. This second night will also be spent at same hotel in Kathmandu.

Day 3: Drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara (820 m)

Third day after morning breakfast, our private vehicle arrives in hotel for picking and shifting you towards bus station to catch tourist standard bus till Pokhara. Therefore splitting valley, bus heads towards west by catching Prithivi Highway to reach Pokhara. Along on the way, we stop twice for breakfast and lunch before steeping Pokhara. Finally after reaching Pokhara, we explore Fewa Lake on leisure hours and stay overnight at lodge.

Day 4: Fly from Pokhara to Jomsom (2,740 m) and trek to Kagbeni (2,800 m)

Often flight from Pokhara to Jomsom are scheduled on morning hours so following our flight time, we move forward to catch our plane on Pokhara Airport to reach Jomsom. Finally after landing on Jomsom Airport, we start our quick bag packs and arrangements along introducing with rest of the trekking crew members. Therefore, developing trek ahead following the trail along the Kali Gandaki River takes to Kagbeni (Gateway of Upper Mustang) for stay overnight.

Day 5: Trek from Kagbeni to Chele (3,050 m)

After getting our permit checked on Kagbeni, we step ahead following the same trail alongside Kali Gandaki River to step Tangbe (Northern valley). Continuing walk ahead admiring narrow alleyways, white-washed houses, apple orchards and terraced fields with seasonal crops offers next village along passing few ridges and streams from there leaving Kali Gandaki valley takes to Chele for spending night.

Day 6: Trek from Chele to Geling (3,475 m)

Early morning leaving Chele behind, we ascend up to Taklam La Pass to reach a flat terrain for easy walk. Continuing walk ahead, following the trail takes to Samar village and descending ridge by passing mini walls, streams, juniper forest and large George leads to Shyangmochen. Therefore, enjoying few tea shops and inspecting a cave ahead takes to Geling. Today’s accommodation and dinner will be arranged at Geling.

Day 7: Trek from Geling to Charang (3,490 m)

Triggering Geiling, today we head forward following west towards the driest part of Mustang by passing terraced fields below Tama Gaon which takes towards Nyi La. Therefore, a vertical ascend from that spot leads to Ghyami to cross a pleasing river along by passing river back and catching mini walls  takes to Charang located at the top of Charang Chu Canyon to spent night.

Day 8: Trek from Charang to Lo Manthang (3,730 m)

After enjoying morning walk throughout Charang village and Red Gompa, we develop our walk forward by ascending up the valley to explore chorten that divides the region of charang and Lo Manthang. From there, continuing walk through windy trail finally takes to Lo Manthang (walled city). This night will be spent at lodge in Lo Manthang.

Day 9: Exploration day at Lo Manthang

Ninth day, we don’t develop our walk ahead. As we are already height above 3,700 m so this day is separated for purpose of acclimatization and exploration. This day, we inspect throughout entire Lo Manthang settlement (Hidden Tibetan kingdom) and explore their traditions, cultures and languages from close. Along this night will be spent at same place in Lo Manthang.

Day 10: Trek from Lo Manthang to Drakmar (3,810 m)

After full day exploration, we move ahead soon early because the trial comes to be windier on day time. Changing the direction towards southwest, we ascend to the Carin located at on height above 4,000 m by passing enjoyable irrigated fields and attractive settlements for last glimpse of Lo Manthang. Continuing the downward trail reaches to Ghar Gompa for observing paintings and artifacts before steeping Drakmar.

Day 11: Trek from Drakmar to Ghiling (3,806)

Today, we start our walk early morning to avoid difficulty on windy and dusty trail so marching forward following our route by passing numerous of caves and long mini walls takes to Ghami village. Therefore, short ascend leads to Ghiling hill before stepping Ghiling village. On remaining hours, we explore settlement and night will be spent at lodge there.

Day 12: Trek from Ghiling to Chhuksang (3,050 m)

Today’s trail is just amazing, we begin our walk forward with easy descend enjoying spectacular land, amazing hills and breathtaking views throughout the Himalaya peaks. Additionally, few villages portraying Tibetan lifestyle also accompany you before walking down to Chhuksang. Finally, leisure hours can be spent strolling the settlement throughout and night will be spent at lodge there.

Day 13: Trek from Chhuksang to Jomsom (2,700 m)

Ending day of walk leaving Chhuksang, begins with downward march through the west bank of river enjoying the views of stunning caves till Kagbeni. Therefore following the trail along Kali Gandaki River takes to Jomsom. You can celebrate evening with trekking members at fine tourist standard restaurant or you can take a rest at lodge if you are feeling tired. This night will be spent at lodge in Jomsom.

Day 14: Fly from Jomsom to Pokhara (820 m)

Last day in Mustang district by following the schedule, we board a flight time from Jomsom to Pokhara. Finally after steeping Pokhara Airport, we check some luxury tourist standard hotels for fresh up and relaxing shower. Remaining time will be utilized by exploring Pokhara valley along enjoying boating on Fewa Lake. This night will be spent at tourist standard hotel in Pokhara.

Day 15: Drive Pokhara to Kathmandu (1,300 m)

After sweet early morning breakfast, we move forward to catch tourist standard bus towards Kathmandu leaving Pokhara. Therefore reaching Kathmandu, you will be picked up by our private vehicle and shifted towards fine tourist standard hotel throughout. Evening hours will be separated for discussing about memorable moments of trekking with farewell dinner and night will be spent at lodge.

Day 16: Departure day

On last day focusing your time, you can go for shopping to collect some gifts for your friends or family members.  We help you for your necessary arrangements and pack ups along our private vehicle transfers you to the airport focusing your departure time. Our representatives will be there to wish for your safe flight and successful steps ahead.

Useful Info

Visa Information

All visitors are required to arrange a visa in order to enter Nepal. A Nepalese visa can be easily obtained upon arrival on arrival in Kathmandu at the airport or Nepalese embassy abroad. But nationals from Afghanistan, Iraq, Cameroon, Ghana, Somalia, Swaziland, Palestine, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Liberia cannot secure the Nepalese Visa upon arrival. The Visa can also be secured at entry point at Nepalese borders. A valid passport for at least six months, recent digital photo (size: 1.5" x 1.5") will be required and you can obtain visas for Nepal from the Nepalese Consulate in your country or up on arrival in Kathmandu Airport. Nepalese visas cost USD 25 for 15 days and USD 40 for 30 days till date.

Official Papers

Some of the required official documents are your valid passport, 4 extra passport sized photographs (for trekking permits), travel insurance, airline tickets and luggage tags. Visas can be obtained upon entry into Nepal.

Weather Information

Weather in the mountains is pretty difficult to predict.  Nights are generally cooler and days are warm.  Months of winter (January and February) are bit colder but the days can be quite beautiful and warm if the sun is out. It snows during the month of January, February and December in Himalayan areas.

Best time to travel

Nepal offers diversified geographical regions and so as the climatic condition differs from the Himalayas to the plains. The climate varies as per the season. Nepal generally offers 4 seasons amongst which autumn and spring are the two most favorable ones for visiting Nepal. It is always wise to know about the weather and climatic condition of the place you visit. The best time to travel really depends on your destination, activities and season of travel. Our destination specialists will recommend certain travel times after learning more about your preferences. The favorable months for trekking and climbing are usually September – November, and February – April. The monsoon season is June – August.

Physical Fitness

Even though the physical fitness plays an important role in trekking you don’t have to be super athletes or a marathon runner to trek in Nepal.  Many people of good fitness for their age can complete the trek. You can prepare yourself before hand by doing some yoga which will prepare you in your breathing as you will be going to the higher altitude. Running or hiking to hills, going for a long walk will also help you. And if you live in urban area running in the stairs of a tall building will also work better in keeping you fit for trekking. All though these preparations aren’t strictly compulsory, you can do well even when the preparations you do aren’t rigorous like that of some ultra-athletic person. Do these things in moderate pace for two months or even less.  And you are set to complete any trekking to Nepal.

Travel Insurance

Doing the insurance while trekking is Nepal is not compulsory but will surely help you a lot if you do one, as it covers any comprehensive expenses possible to acquire due to medical issues or accidents. Your travel insurance must protect air ambulance, treatment charge, rescue and evacuation, product cancellation and refundable charges, flight delay and cancellations. We suggest you to bring you travel insurance certificate or send us scan copy and it must be issued from your home land. We do not arrange or sell insurance so you can find your local travel insurance for this.

Vaccination for Nepal

All travelers should consult with their physician or update on vaccination requirements before travel. (Your doctor or health-care provider will determine what you will need, depending on factors such as your health and immunization history, areas of the country you will be visiting, and planned activities) For traveling to Nepal; we recommend you to take a vaccination of Polio, Tetanus, Typhoid, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Rabies etc, it is not really must but recommended.

We need 20% booking amount to confirm your booking, the payment can be made through the Bank transfer, Credit card payment (Master/Visa card) or through online money transfers also Money Gram, Western Unions or others. After we get the 20% amount we will confirm your booking and you will get the official booking and payment receipt. The final balance for the tour will be paid upon arrival in Kathmandu.

Safety Guidelines

  • Do proper research about the company that you are planning to trek with and make sure they are legally registered travel agency.
  • You should be well acquainted about the travel health and travel insurance before travelling.
  • Have idea about the climate, geography, temperature and environment of Nepal before starting your trip.
  • Using credit cards instead of cash is a wiser idea.
  • Majority of the Nepalese people are nicer but there are few scammers you will come meet on your way and need to avoid them, for example ‘holy men’ who will try to plant a tika (a red paste denoting a blessing) on your forehead demanding a payment for it on streets.
  • Be careful while buying the medicinal herbs as some may be illegal for you t take home and also be aware of duplicate products.
  • Never get yourself involve in doing drugs, trafficking and sexual relations with children as there is a strict rules for these cases and might get yourself into a big problem.
  • Take copies of your passport, visa, air ticket and trekking permits and keep them separately from the originals.
  • Prepare yourself for altitude sickness and be familiar with its symptoms so that you can follow the guidelines for safe acclimatization.
